Pipette calibration to the highest standards

Regular pipette calibration is essential for accurate laboratory results and compliance with quality standards. During pipette calibration, the difference between the dispensed volume and the set volume is determined. Our certified calibration laboratory performs pipette calibration in accordance with national and international standards, ensuring that defined error limits are maintained and measurement uncertainties are documented. Due to frequent use and the pipetting of various liquids, a pipette may no longer perform accurately over time. This applies in particular to the following laboratory pipettes:

Accurate or precise? When does my pipette need to be calibrated?

Below is a graphical representation of a pipette’s precision and accuracy. The target represents the volume range around the central target value; the blue dots are various measured values for a specific volume.

According to the manufacturer's recommendations, the pipette should be inspected every 3 to 12 months, depending on the frequency of pipetting and the type of liquids being pipetted.

Volume range around the central setpoint 1 1 1 1
Accuracy bad good bad good
Precision bad bad good good
Result Measuring instruments must be calibrated Deviations are “equally likely”; measuring instruments must be recalibrated Systematic deviations or measuring instruments that fall outside the error limit must be calibrated Measurements within the tolerance range do not require calibration

Comprehensive pipette maintenance and professional calibration

Pipettes are typically calibrated using a gravimetric method. Regular calibration serves to determine the difference between the dispensed volume and the set volume and to correct it through adjustment. Due to frequent use and the pipetting of various liquids, the pipette may no longer perform accurately over time. This depends on various factors, including whether the pipette is an air-cushion pipette, a direct displacement pipette, or a stepper. According to the manufacturer’s recommendations, the pipette should be checked every 3 to 12 months, depending on the frequency of pipetting operations and the type of liquids being pipetted.

This is a strong argument in favor of external calibration at neoLab GmbH

The main reasons not to perform pipette calibration yourself are the high costs associated with equipment, personnel, and special environmental conditions:

Air-conditioned measurement room

The design and operating principle of air-cushion pipettes require specific environmental conditions:

  • Temperature
  • Relative humidity
  • Air pressure

The measurement procedure is predetermined and is strictly followed

An example of this is the following process:

  1. The pipette tips must be conditioned with the test fluid: aspirate and dispense five times
  2. Record the set volume and wait a moment
  3. Squeeze out the liquid and hold your thumb on the release button as you pull it out
  4. Weighing
  5. Hold the pipette vertically when aspirating and withdrawing; maintain a 30–45° angle when dispensing.

Precise measurement procedures

To ensure the accuracy levels required for successful pipette calibration, extremely precise measuring instruments are necessary. The following requirements must be met:

0,1 - 10 µl 6-digit scale Microbalance
20 - 250 µl 5-digit scale Semi-micro balance
300 - 1000 µl 4-digit scale Analytical balance

 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How often should pipettes be calibrated? Icon

Calibration intervals depend on frequency of use and quality requirements. According to the manufacturer’s recommendation, a pipette service inspection should be performed every 3 to 12 months.

What is the difference between calibration and adjustment?Icon

During calibration, the measurement deviation is documented, whereas adjustment additionally involves making corrections to bring the device back within the tolerance range. What environmental conditions are required for calibration?

Temperature, relative humidity, and air pressure must be precisely controlled, as these parameters have a direct impact on the measurement results
