Sieve inserts determine the final fineness of the specimen. Sieve inserts with trapezoidal perforation and square perforation are offered. Sieve inserts with square perforation are recommended for comminution of brittle materials and materials of medium fineness with narrow grain width band. Sieve inserts with trapezoidal perforations provide additional size reduction through increased shearing action. Sieve inserts made of chromium-free steel ST12 are especially recommended for sample preparation according to RoHS and WEEE (e.g. for the detection of hexavalent chromium) and for XRF analysis. For all other applications, stainless steel sieve inserts can be used as they are harder and therefore more resistant to abrasion.
