Nutrient media for drinking water testing should cover as wide a range of microorganisms as possible, i.e. provide an optimum range of nutrients, in order to be able to cultivate as many germs as possible. According to the German Drinking Water Ordinance, a limit of 100 cfu/ml (colony-forming units per milliliter) applies to piped drinking water. Coliform germs (indicator of fecal contamination) have a special status; here, not a single colony may be detected per 100 ml.
