The May-Grünwald stain is a differential stain for air-dried blood smears and cytological preparations.
Dyes included are methylene blue and eosin Y or eosin B. Methylene blue stains nucleic acids (e.g., chromosomes), which is why the stain is also used for cytodiagnostics. Eosin stains basic areas within cells such as DNA-binding proteins. A combination of May-Grünwald staining with Giemsa staining is called Pappenheim staining.
