The raw materials used comply with the highest quality grade. Thereby borosilicate glass of hydrolytic class I as well as natural rubber are used.

1) Autosampler vials

Contingent on the respective manufacturer the most commonly used 12 x 32 mm laboratory vials are indicated with a volume of 1.5 ml, 1.8 ml or 2.0 ml. These vials are made from borosilicate glass of hydrolytic class I, PP or TPX. Divergent sizes are possible up to a volume of 50 ml. Thanks to micro inserts the volume of the laboratory vials can be reduced down to 50 µl. 

Once the appropriate laboratory vial has been found the lid is essential. Options include threading, rolled edges or snap rings. The threadings are divided into the different sizes (such as ND9, ND11 etc.), headspace vials and short-thread vials. The selection of lid is based on the closure type and your requirements.

2) Lids

The appropriate lid for every laboratory vial: no matter whether crimp or screw cap, headspace or snap ring cap. Screw caps from PP or snap ring caps from PE with hole, crimp caps from classic aluminum and center tear-off caps are a common material in different laboratories. Magnetic crimp or complete tear-off caps and magnetic screw caps are considered exotic and are mainly used in the pharmaceutical field.


Headspace caps stand out from the previous closures through their overpressure protection.

3) Septa

In the field of chromatography septa play an important role, due to the fact that all lids are equipped with various septa. The 8 most commonly used materials are natural rubber, TEF, PTFE, silicone, aluminum foil and different Pharma-Fix septa.

The resulting characteristics drive the choice of the septum:

  • Natural rubber/TEF are temperature resistant from -40 to +120 ºC and show good resealability. Ideal for multiple injections.
  • Butyl/PTFE has proven good chemical characteristics through extremely pure synthetic rubber with analog temperature range to natural rubber.
  • Red rubber/PTFE is more pure and softer than natural rubber, however with lower fragmentation. Temperature resistant from -40 to +110 ºC.
  • Silicone/PTFE is more pure than red rubber and suited for one-time injections. Temperature resistant from -60 to +200 ºC.
  • PTFE/Silicone/PTFE is the upgrade through low particle formation during penetration.
  • Silicone/Aluminum foil is commonly used with Perkin Elmer instruments in a temperature range from -60 to +220 ºC.
  • PTFE virginal is a highly temperature resistant septum for one-time injections.
  • Pharma-Fix septa achieve very good sealing with PTFE contact area of the sample
