On January 11, 1950, Kurt Franz Theodor Migge founded today's company neoLab as a “one-man business” at the old goods station in Heidelberg, at that time still under the name “Migge Laborbedarf”. The purchase and sale of "laboratories" - and medical devices of all kinds, glass devices, was the company's purpose. The time was characterized by reconstruction. Tackling was the motto. Kurt Migge gradually built up his qualified laboratory trade, which focused on supplying the Rhine-Neckar region with laboratory supplies. His pragmatism and his close customer relationships were the cradle for today's success and have shaped the spirit of the company until now.

From a glass blowing to a laboratory wholesaler

They were the core business of the laboratory trade, the glassware. In addition to the pure trade in laboratory equipment and consumables, Kurt Migge ran a small shop in the chemical institute of Heidelberg University. The company's own glass blowing shop provided the customers with manufacture and repairs. The demand grew rapidly, professors and students covered themselves with “Migge Laborbedarf” with laboratory supplies. The product range grew, and various relocations became necessary to take account of the increasing space requirements. The change from the seller to the buyer market shaped the industry and good ideas and differentiation from the competition were required. In 1968 the son of the company founder, the business graduate Michael Peter Migge, joined the company.

Process optimization is coming

The workforce and the owner family were proud of the new, own company building. In 1976 Michael Peter Migge became managing director and took over the management of the company. With innovative ideas and creativity, he continued to expand and thus played a decisive role in the company's success. Electronic data processing (EDP) conquered the purchase and sale of all laboratory items. The cost pressure increased and required the optimization of all business processes.

The catalogue as a seller at the customer's office

The initially small product catalog grew year after year. By the end of the 90s it had a length of 700 pages with more than 7,000 laboratory articles. Separate branches were opened in Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart in order to support customers with a field service in addition to the mail order business. In 1996 the two companies were merged to form neoLab Migge Laborbedarf-Vertriebs GmbH. The former subsidiary became the dominant namesake. From the beginning, neoLab also manufactured its own products. For example, the round piston brush and the gas cylinder trolley were developed. neoLab quality management systems are certified in accordance with the DIN EN ISO 9001: 2008 standard for the manufacture and sale of laboratory equipment.

Own brands and e-commerce

neoLab bundled its own brands under the “neoLabLine” brand umbrella. Laboratory specialty products have been and are being developed from the industry for the industry, making it easier and safer to work in the laboratories. neoLab pushed electronic trade with its own neoLab web shop and the individual e-procurement solution "myneolab". The customized procurement solutions reduce i.e. the process costs of our customers. With more than 50 employees, a nationwide sales force, print and online sales channels, a total range of more than 100,000 articles available, accessible via various trading platforms, the medium-sized company aimed for international competition. In 2008 the long-time employee Günter Wissing became managing director of neoLab.

Knowledge pays off

The international orientation of neoLab continues to be advanced, both in procurement and in sales. The first English-language product catalog appears in 2011. Whether scientists or laboratory workers, neoLab relies on specialist staff with practical experience to strengthen its team. The number of employees increases to more than 70 and the field service is practically nationwide active in Germany. The neoLab e-commerce and e-procurement solutions grow together and combine their advantages in customized solutions.

New shine

Thorsten Migge becomes another managing director: At the end of 2014 Thorsten Migge, son of Michael Migge, joins the company as second managing director and partner.
The neoLab brand continues to develop! The product range has grown steadily over the years and the number of employees has also increased. The employees are constantly trained, and new ways are tried out; Expansion of own brands, new product classes, new sales partners and sales channels are created. But the appearance of neoLab remained the same. The corporate design of neoLab was also renewed in 2014.
New exhibition appearance: For example, the new exhibition appearance appeared modern, open and competent and was enjoyed by many visitors.

Expansion of multi-channel sales

In addition to the new appearance at trade fairs and in general business operations, the catalog and website were also adapted to the new design in 2016. The website also comes with a massive revision and functional enhancements. The presence of neoLab on social platforms was actively designed. As a result, the e-commerce sales channel is being expanded more.
Name change: Also, in 2016 the name was changed from neoLab Migge Labor- und Vertriebs GmbH to neoLab Migge GmbH.

neolab.de as the central online platform

This year we placed our neolab.de shop much more actively in the laboratory market. In addition to a new layout, the product categories have been optimized. For the first time, we introduced the so-called neoLab "brand worlds". These consist of individual brand shops within the neoLab product universe. Customers with manufacturer affinity can quickly get an overview of the entire manufacturer range on neolab.de without complicated filter settings. The neoLab "Brand Worlds" originally started with 5 manufacturers. Thanks to their high popularity, we have tripled the number of brand shops so far and currently have 15 brand shops on neoLab.de (as of Jan 2020).

Restructuring of neoLogistics

New fleet! This year we sent our two loyal caddies into well-deserved retirement. After almost 10 years of service with over 20,000 deliveries, our two yellow speedsters have done their job. This year we proudly presented our two new caddies! Of course, in the new neoLab design. Since then you have ensured the decisive competitive advantage in the delivery of customer orders (focus: Neuenheimer Feld) thanks to their speed!

In addition to the investments in our fleet, a lot has happened in the warehouse. Starting from new personnel to warehouse management, a lot has been done to further reduce delivery times. However, we are not done yet! We will continue to make constant adjustments in this area and continuously improve the shopping experience at neoLab.

Digitization at the customer - field service 2.0

Steve Jobs would be happy about that! In 2019, our entire field service was equipped with personal iPads. Inquiries, orders or services can now be dealt with directly at the customer's premises. There is no need to drag tons of manufacturer catalogs. We are proud to take a big step towards “paperless sales force”. Thanks to this digitalization, we were able to standardize the field service versus the office service and thus significantly accelerate customer inquiries of all kinds! Here too, we see tremendous growth in the future and have set ourselves the goal of making all internal information MOBILE accessible so that we can deliver an even better customer service on site.
