Accurate or precise? When should my pipette be calibrated?

Once or regularly? How often does my pipette has to be calibrated?

Calibration is a gravimetric inspection of pipettes. Regular calibration is used to determine and correct the difference between the metered and adjusted volumes. Frequent use and pipetting of various liquids will cause the pipette to lose its exact performance over time. This depends on several factors, including whether it is an air cushion pipette, a direct displacer or a stepper. According to the manufacturer's recommendation, a check of the pipette should take place between 3 and 12 months, depending on the frequency of the pipetting procedures and the type of pipetted liquids.

    The design and operating principle of air cushion pipettes require defined environmental conditions:

    • Temperature
    • relative humidity
    • air pressure

    These parameters have a direct influence on the conditions in the air cushion and cause large errors if they are not set exactly or are known! The room conditions may differ only minimally from the setpoint, otherwise no calibration is possible

    #2 Measuring procedure is given and must be kept exactly

    An example of this is the following procedure:

    • The pipette tip must be conditioned with the test liquid (distilled water), sucked up 5 times and dispensed
    • Record the volume set and wait a moment
    • Release volume into liquid and hold thumb while pulling on pickup button
    • Weigh it
    • Hold the pipette upright while sucking up the liquid and pulling the tip out of the test liquid. When dispensing fluid, maintain a 30-45 ° angle
